These instructions are straight from the developer, which means they can be improved.

  • Please register on the wiki, and edit these or other instructions to make them more accurate or suitable for yourself and other users.

Test each new version according to these instructions, which will change with each new upgrade version. If you run into problems, see Troubleshooting MoneyPal and Error Codes.

  • Locate and back up or copy your Money 2008 or Sunset file. (Of course, you should always back up to a different disk, for example, a flash drive, or another computer.)
  • Optionally, open Microsoft Money 2008 or Sunset on the same file.
  • Launch PalOMoney.
  • Locate and open your Money file. If necessary, see Password Protected Money File.
    • If there is an error, use Notepad to open the log file in the MnyUpdates folder under your Money file folder. The log file is date and time stamped, e.g., PalOMoney_2013-02-10_07-05.log.
  • Observe the list of securities you have in your investment accounts. Make sure that the totals agree to the corresponding list in Money (note that the PalOMoney listing currently does not include the cash accounts in your investment accounts).
  • Fiddle with the column widths, and check the column sorting.
  • Since the ini file is created/updated after closing PalOMoney the Quote sources are not available the first time the program is run. Close PalOMoney, relaunch, open your Money file and observe that the window placement and column widths are the same as previously and that the internal Quote sources are now available.
  • Click Update Now to update your quotes using the default settings.
  • Observe the updated investment prices and totals in the PalOMoney list.
  • Optionally, observe updated data in the MS Money. You might have to refresh the page.
  • Optionally, fetch historical quotes:
    • Click the History check box.
    • Click the Specify Historical button (labeled ...) to launch the Historical Quotes dialog
    • Choose or enter appropriate settings (e.g., Weekly on Fridays) and click Ok to close.
    • Click Update Now to update both historical and real time quotes.
  • Play with the controls, and see which ones work.
  • 1.0.4 Right-click a security, and observe that the Ext Update Now and Add History commands are greyed. Click the Online command to toggle the update method from Online to Manual. Observe the field change to indicate the new method.
  • 1.0.4 Install the Example Quote Source and perform the additional tests besides those in the topic.
    • Set the Quote Source selector to the external source, and right click a security, then try the Ext Update Now and Add History commands.
    • Do the same after making a selection of 2 or more securities.
  • Check the help function:
    • Tool-tips give hints on what controls do. These should work.
    • The Help button (arrow-question mark) should launch the Help file and open an appropriate topic.
    • The Help menu pick should open the help file to the Table of Contents.
    • The help topics should be accurate and up-to-date.
    • Some help topics are links to this and other web pages on the wiki. Make sure these external links work.
    • If registered on the wiki, you should be able to log in and edit from the help system. Feel free to create new topics by adding a wiki link on a page, saving or previewing it, then clicking on the link and adding the topic. The main table of contents includes a How to Wiki topic.
  • 1.0.4 Select Edit | Extras | Tax Tables to open the Tax Rates dialog. Use the right and left arrow buttons to scroll through the records. Update the records to conform to current and past year tax rates. Optionally, add a record for the new year.
  • From time to time, click the View Logs button to display the log files. Some of these can be used to update other financial software packages. You can open these in Notepad, and/or set the Explorer Preview Handler to view them in the Explorer Preview pane.
  • 1.0.4 Check the MoneyPal command line updater. See Troubleshooting MoneyPal.
  • If something doesn't work, post a message to the support forum.
    • Include any relevant entries from the PalOMoney_xxx.log in the MnyUpdates folder. Log files and dialogs display codes for any errors encountered. See Error Codes.
      • However, redact ('XXXX') any personal information before posting or emailing!!!
  • If you have suggestions or comments, post them to the appropriate forum. You can also search this wiki.
